In 1498, Christopher Columbus discovered Margarita Island. The local natives named Guaiqueries received the conquering Spaniards with open arms unaware that they later would become slaves of their own wealth. Pearls would represent almost a third of all New World tribute to the Spanish Crown. Margarita had to be fortified against the increasing threat of pirate attacks.

In 1814, its people's brave fight for independence and Margarita became the first free territory in Venezuela and it was on this island that Simon Bolivar, called the Libertador, was confirmed as Commander in Chief of the new republic.

Margarita is a Caribbean island of Venezuela, located at the Northeast of Caracas, the country's capital, within a 35 minute flight, or a couple of hours by ferry from Puerto La Cruz or Cumana. It is one of the most tourist places in Venezuela.

Margarita is well known for the quality of its beaches. Being an island, it is surrounded by beaches, and there is one for every taste. You can find a beach with or without waves, large or small, crowded or not, deep or not, cold or warm, windy or not, just select what you want, and you've got it.

Gastronomy

Margarita offers an endless selection of restaurants to satisfy any taste and budget. An amazing variety of fresh seafood, as well as its many typical local dishes. The water around the island supplies local fishermen with a daily load of fresh lobsters, crayfish, shrimps, octopus, kingfish, tuna fish and red snapper.

The national dish in Venezuela, called Pabellón Criollo, consists of shredded beef served with black beans, white rice and fried plantains. Also, you have to try on Empanada and on Arepa, it is part of the folklore. It's essentially a bread made of cornmeal, deep-fried and filled with either cheese, meat, beans, eggs or other ingredients.

You will find a large variety of tropical fruits and local juices: coconut, mango, melon, papaya, passion fruit,…and the typical Cocada made with the coconut water and fruit.

The most popular beer in Venezuela is called Polar, good and comparatively cheap.

Also, try the coffee, one of the best in the world.
