City information.
EXCURSIONS: On the weekend, students are provided with the opportunity to experience today´s indigenous culture outside the city of Oaxaca. Weekend tours, led by a bilingual guide, visit archaeological sites, indigenous markets and artisan villages around the central valley of Oaxaca. The tours are optional and are available at an additional cost of US$15 - US$18. Some of the destinations include the following:
Tlacolula: This village is home to one of the largest indigenous markets in Mexico and is an excellent place to buy artesanias or simply watch Zapotecs make their weekly purchases. In addition to the colorful, bustling market, Tlacolula is famous for its cathedral.
Teotitlán: This Zapotec village is world famous for its weavings. The wool is hand-carded and on many occasions only natural dyes are used. Students can observe weavers who still employ traditional techniques to produce Zapotec designs in their woven rugs.
