City information

Granada is the capital of the Andalusian province of the same name located in the east of this area, in the south of Jaén. Its geographical diversity and its multiple landscapes characterize it: the coast with the hot climate; cultivations on the plain and of Génil; and mountainous areas with cold climate, where the peak of the highest peninsula is found, Mulhacén at 3.481 Mr. of altitude. The city is located at the bottom of the Nevada Sierra, with the junction of the Darro and Génil rivers . Thanks to its particular history, it was seen equipped with a great artistic richness which goes back to the Arab palaces and the architectonic jewels of the rebirth. The fact of having been the last Arab kingdom on the peninsula, granted a great symbolic value to
it. The aspect of the city is determined by the hills on which were established the old workings, built in Albaicin and Alhambra, with the narrow and inclined streets, with beautiful recesses and surprising perspective. The new city is located on the plain, it's crossed by the large axes formed by Gran Iria de Colón and the Avenue of the Catholic Kings, and the lattice of the noisy streets around the Cathedral.
The Moslems, who crossed the Straits of Gibraltar in 711, were established on what was a small wisigothe city, on the hill of
Alambra. Once established, they erected the walls and built the foundations which were used for the development and the flourishing civilization which succeeded them. It was in IX century that Granada started to take importance, after the fall of the caliphate of Cordoba. Its splendor arrived in 1238, when Mohamed Ben Nasal founded the nazarite dynasty where the kingdom of Grenade extended from Gibraltar to
Murcie. Its dynasty gave twenty kings until Boabdil, the Small one, had to deliver Grenade to Catholic Kings , in 1492. During these three centuries of splendid and rich Islamic culture had developed a legacy of architectonic works of an immense artistic value like that of Albambra which, with
General life and I' Albaïcin, was declared by UNESCO " Inheritance of Humanity. The Pretty XVI century old cathedral includes a royal vault with the tombs of Ferdinand d' Aragon and Isabelle. The growth of the city continued after the conquest, encouraged by Catholic Kings who built new civil and religious buildings.
