Town's information
Pictures of Guatemala and city of Antigua
Like Pompeii, Antigua previously named Santiago
de Los Caballeros was deserted for centuries. Founded in 1543, surrounded by Volcano like Agua Fuego
and Acatenango, Antigua was one of the three most powerful cities of America with Mexico-City and Lima (Peru).
It was the capital of Guatemala for more than 20 years. This city reached a high level of civilization like Seville or Madrid in Spain. It's a town of churches, monasteries
and universities. In 1773, the city was devastated by an earthquake.
Today, this tragedy is still present when you see this place.
Visit the San Jose Cathedral, Santa Catalina monastery
founded in 1609 with its yellow arch. Also Santa Clara and
Santo Domingo Monasteries for Capuchins. As souvenirs, you'll be able to bring back home jewels
(gold or silver), coffee and ceramics. Jade is also available
in Antigua. During the holly week, hundreds of men,
women and children participate in holly processions. For this very special event, they cover the streets with a large carpet made with sawdust and flower petals. This is a very spectacular event you can't miss.
