City information

Before becoming Canada's capital, Ottawa, known then underOttawa the name of Bytown, was only lumberjacks' camp, at the confluence of Curtain' canal and Ottawa' river, in the geographic centre of the province of Canada. In 1857, queen Victoria decided to make the capital for the satisfaction of the legislators, not able to choose between Toronto and Montreal. In 1859 began the construction of the parliament buildings of neo Gothic style and the government, copied to those from Westminster in London. Since 1867, date in which the city became officially capital of the Confederacy, Ottawa did not stop to grow and forms a city of more than 700000 inhabitants today. Political heart of the country, it is also a big cultural centre, proud of its universities, prestigious sound National Museum, as well as of its very beautiful National Gallery. You can visit also the Science and the Technology museum, the museum of the Fine art and walk along the Curtain' canal during summer or skate above during the long winters. In February you can attend the magnificent sculptures on ice and attend the ball of snows. In spring you will discover the beauty of tulips. Every year Holland offers to the city thousands and thousands of bulbs to decorate its flowerbeds.
